Ali G interviews the Great linguist Noam Chomsky about the study of languages.
Ali G intervista il grande linguista Noam Chomsky sullo studio delle lingue.
Chomsky: Language is the core property that basically defines human beings.
Ali G: So when animals chat to each other, does them talk in language?
Chomsky: Well, that’s more or less a matter of definition. I mean, every organism has some means of communication, including insects.
Ali G: How many words does you know?
Chomsky: Well… the… normally humans, by maturity, have tens of thousands of words…
Ali G: For real?
Chomsky: Yeah.
Ali G: What is some of them?
Chomsky: Well, the ones we’re using.
Ali G: For real. Me know loads of words: parachute, photograph, anthems, spaghetti, camera…
Chomsky: Well, if you count them up it’ll be in the tens of thousands.
Ali G: Mi cousin Sanjeev, who’s got a Bangladeshi mum and his dad comes from Staines (represent, West Side) does you think he’ll grow up speaking both languages?
Chomsky: It’s two languages, you call it bilingual, many languages, you call it multilingual.
Ali G: So are you saying mi cousin may grow up bilingual?
Chomsky: In normal circumstances he will.
Ali G: But professor ain’t it wrong to say just because him behaviour to speak two languages that him will be into ladies and aklso into boys?
Chomsky: I don’t understand, there’s no connection at all. I mean whether he ends up liking boys and girls
Ali G: He’s gonna grow up to be Bi
Chomsky: Bilingual means having two languages and it’s nothing to do with bi in the sense you’re thinking of. Bilingual means having two languages, has not the meaning bisexual.
Ali G: But how would you like if i called you bilingual?
Chomsky: I’d love if i was bilingual, I’d love if i was multilingual, if i had many different languages I’d be a richer person.
Ali G: What’s multilingual?
Chomsky: Having many languages. Multilingual means many.
Ali G: Cose mi nan’s friend Derek, him was telling mi nan that he is cunnilingual, how many languages does it mean him speak?
Chomsky: Again, let me say heach of us speaks many anguages.
Ali G: Why don’t you create a new language, where instead of like the word bread you have something like “meffelo” or “meffela” or no no no or “laffeina” or for a type called “playla”, oh no no no “playla” would be better for dog.
Comsky: You can do it if you’d like, but nobody would pay attention to you’re just wasting your time.
Ali G: But you could earn a lot of money
Chomsky: No you wouldn’t because nobody would pay attention.
Ali G: Yo, so check it out, you’s heard the words of ma main man, listen up, be clever whole clever like him and start speaking proper. Respek!
Chomsky: Ahah okay…
Ali G: Big up yourself.
